Simple Steps for a Healthier Lawn

May is one of the most important months for keeping your lawn on track. What you do now will carry your grass through the heat of summer. The good news is—it doesn’t take a lot. A few well-timed steps can make a big difference in how your lawn looks and performs.

During the month of May, it’s time to fertilize again.

If you applied fertilizer in early March, plan to put out another application in late May. Grass uses nutrients quickly during the spring growing season, and this second feeding helps maintain strong, steady growth.

If you’re using organic fertilizers like Nature’s Creation, Medina, or Texas Tee, it’s best to fertilize a little earlier—typically in early May—to keep that natural growth cycle moving.

Staying on schedule is one of the simplest ways to keep your lawn looking full and healthy.

Use the Right Fertilizer for Your Grass

Not all lawns need the same nutrients, so choosing the right blend matters.

  • Bermuda lawns respond best to a high-nitrogen fertilizer, such as a 28-3-10. This helps promote strong growth and that deep green color.
  • St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns do better with a more balanced blend, like 15-5-10, which supports overall health without pushing too much top growth.

If you’re not sure what type of grass you have, bring in a sample or a picture—we’re happy to help you figure it out.

Watch for Fungus in St. Augustine

As temperatures rise and humidity increases, St. Augustine lawns can become more prone to fungus.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Discolored or patchy areas
  • Thinning spots that seem to spread

Catching it early makes it much easier to manage and keeps your lawn looking consistent.

Consider a Second Pre-Emergent Application

If you applied a pre-emergent in late winter (around February), it’s a good idea to consider another application in mid to late May.

With wetter weather possibly on the way, weed growth can pick up quickly. A second application helps extend your protection and keeps weeds from becoming a bigger problem later.

  • For traditional programs, Dimension or Barricade are solid options
  • For organic programs, corn gluten meal works well

A little prevention now goes a long way toward keeping your lawn clean and easy to maintain.

Set Your Lawn Up for Summer Success

A healthy lawn doesn’t happen all at once—it’s built over time with consistent care.

By staying on schedule with fertilizer, using the right blend for your grass, and keeping weeds under control, you’re setting your lawn up to handle the heat and stay looking its best.
