What to Expect This Season—and How to Stay Prepared

According to our weather forecasts, we can expect a spring similar to what we had last year. We are moving into an El Niño neutral period, which typically brings average temperatures and average rainfall, with a transition toward a more defined El Niño pattern from late May into July. This is good news for farmers and ranchers. There should be an ample supply of hay, although prices may be slightly higher than last year due to fuel and fertilizer costs.

With more consistent rainfall, we can expect the entire ecosystem to flourish. Moderate temperatures and steady moisture help everything grow, which means more activity across the board:

  • More plant growth means more food for wildlife
  • More food leads to more rodents
  • More rodents can mean more snakes
  • Increased activity also means more fleas

It’s all connected.

Flea Prevention Options

Flea prevention can be a challenge, especially if you are trying to protect pollinators around your home or garden. There are still options. One approach is spraying your yard with a mix of dish soap and orange oil, which helps suffocate fleas. Keep in mind, one treatment is usually not enough—you need to break the life cycle, so multiple applications may be needed.

A more consistent option is giving your pets a monthly flea tablet. We carry Capshield, which is a once-a-month option that works well for ongoing prevention. If you are looking for stronger protection, flea and tick tablets that include heartworm prevention are very effective and are available through your veterinarian.
